NIMH Director's Innovation Speaker Series: Life Through a Navajo Lens Beyond the Navajo Reservation

NIMH Director's Innovation Speaker Series: Life Through a Navajo Lens Beyond the Navajo ReservationOn October 12, 2021, Glorinda Segay, D.B.H., was the next guest speaker for the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Director’s Innovation Speaker Series. Dr. Segay is the Director of the Division of Behavioral Health (DBH) at the Indian Health Service (IHS) and an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation in the Southwest. The Navajo Reservation is rich in cultural ways, language, and practices. However, the unique elements that become integral to someone who is born and raised on the Navajo Reservation may not always work in a new environment and can result in trauma. To adapt after dislocation, resilience is needed—but it can be challenging without the ways and wisdom of the elders. During her talk, Dr. Segay shared her journey, her work at the IHS, and what the agency does to promote mental health among Native Americans.
